Carl Frampton is on the cusp of history as he prepares to face Jamel Herring in a much anticipated world title fight tonight.

Having previously held world titles at super-bantamweight and featherweight, ‘The Jackal’ will seek to become Ireland’s first ever three-weight world boxing champion when he challenges for the WBO super-featherweight belt in Dubai.

This bout was originally supposed to happen last year before being booked to take place on February 27 at London’s Copper Box Arena, only to then be postponed and a new location sought after Frampton suffered a hand injury in training.

The Pride of Belfast first fractured his hand in the summer of 2019 and required surgery on both hands following his unanimous decision win over Tyler McCreary that November - his first fight since losing the IBF featherweight title clash with Josh Warrington in Manchester.

34-year-old Frampton last fought at York Hall in August, stopping replacement opponent Darren Traynor in the seventh round.

Next opponent Herring has held the WBO strap since upsetting Masayuki Ito in Florida in May 2019, successfully defending it in subsequent wins over Lamont Roach Jr and Jonathan Oquendo, the latter of whom was disqualified for an intentional headbutt.

The performance against Oquendo was hardly convincing by the American southpaw, 35, a former US Marine sergeant who served two tours in Iraq.

“Having the potential of millions being able to watch me make history is truly special. Thank you.”

Frampton vs Herring fight prediction

Frampton’s best days in the boxing ring are surely now behind him, while Herring flattered to deceive during his second defence against Oquendo.

Still, this is a really intriguing and potentially evenly-matched contest that could go either way.

Frampton will have to be smart against a tricky southpaw with obvious height, weight and reach advantages, though it seems doubtful that Herring possesses the power necessary to force a stoppage.

We’re backing ‘The Jackal’ to become Ireland’s very first three-weight world champion after an efficient performance that brings a comfortable points win.
