From France to Finland, the best European festivals to go to this summer

Beats, bands and beautiful locations. What more could you want? Frankie McCoy selects Europe’s hottest parties...

Untold, Romania

The vibe: a euphoric, laser-lit fairground of a dance fest in vampire country, Transylvania.

The tribe: total EDM-heads who can rapturously rave for 72 hours. Avicii’s death hit hard earlier this year, but they’re going to do this festival for him, goddammit.

See live: anthems, obvs, from Tiesto and Armin van Buuren and The actual Prodigy.

2 to 5 Aug (untold.com)

Exit festival, Serbia

The vibe: totally mad all-night party in a fortress.

The tribe: proper wild-eyed rave heads who are tanned and fit enough to pull off the 50 sleepless hours with aplomb — and not worried about eating or showering or doing anything apart from festivalling the hell out of this place.

See live: David Guetta, Martin Garrix and Grace Jones.

12-15 Jul (exitfest.org)

Machine du Vin, France

The vibe: wine, trippy electro and grape stomping in the grounds of a chateau in Camon.

The tribe: boho winos who would normally be smuggling orange wine into Glasto. They fall asleep early, which is fine because it means they’re up in time for French-press coffee and fresh croissants.

See live: Hercules and Love Affair (right) and Bonobo for woozy, blissed-out boogying with the second bottle.

30 Aug to 1 Sep (machineduvin.com)

Bilbao BBK Live, Spain

The vibe: indie kid festival up a Basque mountain.

The tribe: classic festival legends who love a glitter eye and an animal onesie and can live three days on a 12-pack of warm cider.

See live: Florence + the Machine (right), The XX — you know the drill.

12-14 Jul (bilbaobbklive.com)

Flow, Finland

The vibe: high-end, green and very, very Nordic.

The tribe: shiny, clean, model-hot types who can somehow drink loads and sleep little while retaining a perfect eye flick for Instagram. They appreciate Nordic gastronomy even on day three.

See live: dual feminist icons Lauryn Hill and Patti Smith.

Sziget, Hungary

The vibe: basically British Summer Time in Budapest —big pop names and chart-toppers on Óbuda Island.

The tribe: boat party-loving Szitizens who are glued to their squad and phones all weekend. Literally so excited for Dua Lipa. Survive on Red Bull and glitter and will ask any randomer to lift them on their shoulders. Yaaas queen.

See live: Stormzy, Clean Bandit, Lana Del Ray (above), obviously.

8-15 Aug (szigetfestival.com)

Terraforma, Italy

The vibe: ‘terraforming is the theoretical process in which life on a planet becomes possible through the creation of an atmosphere. Terraforma is the manifest of our belief that new dimensions can now be terraformed.’ Yep.

The tribe: masters of cacao ceremonies and gong bath queens who say there’s no definitive proof aliens don’t exist.

See live: Gabor Lazar’s ‘Crisis of Representation #2’, Persian drum workshop with tombak and daf master Mohammad Reza Mortazavi.

29 Jun to 1 Jul (terraformafestival.com)

Oya Festival, Norway

(FilmMagic)
(FilmMagic)

The vibe: super-sustainable day festival in Oslo city centre.

The tribe: gorgeous, lithe eco-warriors who’ll litter-pick out of love and be tucked up in a proper bed by midnight for morning yoga. They won’t blink at shelling out £17 for a pint; it’s not like they’re going to actually get drunk.

See live: good clean fun acts such as Kendrick Lamar and Arctic Monkeys (right).

7-11 Aug (oyafestivalen.no)

Rock en Seine, France

The vibe: Paris’s rather more rock ’n’ roll alternative to Glasto.

The tribe: Worthy Farm, c’est trop mainstream now, mais non? Distinguishable from the average Glasto head by their ability to make strange piercings look cool. Has achingly high levels of insouciance and can chain smoke 80 cigarettes.

See live: Charlotte Gainsbourg followed by Liam Gallagher (above) proves that les Français just do line-ups more cleverly than we do.

24-26 Aug (rockenseine.com)

Sea Dance, Montenegro

The vibe: Exit festival’s little sister, on a beach.

The tribe: sun-worshipping, electro-pop caners.

See live: tbc (they’re all still recovering from last year, when Fatboy Slim and Sean Paul headlined).

30 Aug to 1 Sep (seadancefestival.me)

Roskilde, Denmark

The vibe: massive nine-stage festival that attracts the big names and donates all profits to charity.

The tribe: natural-born hipsters — completely mental and body confident enough to take part in the annual Naked Run.

See live: anyone, everyone. Sigrid, Bruno Mars (left), Massive Attack, Eminem, Stormzy, My Bloody Valentine…

30 Jun-7 Jul (roskilde-festival.dk)

Pohoda, Slovakia

The vibe: really, really friendly arts and culture one where literally anything goes.

The tribe: clever hippies for whom Brexit is the worst thing ever and who like their Chemical Brothers with a side of chemical-free vegan stew.

See live: Pussy Riot Theatre with a soothing side of Jamie Cullum.
