A freak fire broke out after light shining through a festive snow globe sparked a blaze at a house in Kent.

The wintery ornament acted like a magnifying glass as sun shone through the window of a family home in East Peckham, fire fighters said.

Flames burst from the snow globe and set alight to curtains prompting 26-year-old Alex Wozney to leap into action and save his family's Christmas

He tore down the curtains and ran outside with them before the fire could spread.

His father, Paul, said his actions "saved Christmas".

Mr Wozney was upstairs when he heard the smoke alarm sounding on the ground floor of the property on Tuesday.

He spotted flames coming from the curtains and rushed to put them out before the fire could spread to the family's nearby Christmas tree.

Two fire crews were called to the scene, and firefighters checked the fire was fully out using a thermal imaging camera.

The windowsill and the window frame was damaged by the blaze, and there was slight damage to the ceiling and wooden floor and sofa in the lounge.

The young man suffered minor burns to his hands and foot, and was advised to visit the hospital.

Mr Wozney's father praised the quick actions of his son, saying he "undoubtedly saved our home".

He said: “I think he was really brave and his actions undoubtedly saved our home. I dread to think how things would have turned out if we hadn’t had smoke alarms.

"We would have definitely lost all our Christmas presents and could also have been without a home this Christmas.”
