Freddie Starr death: Comedian and I'm A Celebrity star found dead at his Spanish home aged 76

Comedian Freddie Starr has died at the age of 76.

The entertainer, who appeared on I'm a Celebrity in 2011, was found dead at his home in Costa Del Sol, Spain, The Sun reported.

His cause of death was not immediately clear but he was reportedly found by a carer at his flat.

The Mersyside-born comic, impressionist, singer and actor had a history of heart problems and asthma.

Police have said that they believe his death was not suspicious and that he died of natural causes.

A neighbour told The Mirror: "He’s been quite ill ever since he moved in and has barely left his apartment since moving in a couple of years ago."

Starr appeared on ITV's I’m a Celebrity Get Me Out Of Here in 2011, a year after he had recovered from quadruple bypass surgery which followed a heart attack.

A meal of fermented egg and a camel toe forced comic Starr to leave the show after he suffered an allergic reaction and had to be taken to hospital.

Medics advised Starr to drop out of the competition in case his illness flared up again.

After recovering from his operation in 2010 he was forced to pull out of a number of public appearances in 2015 due to a lung condition

Star was lead singer of pop group the Midniters and also presented game show Beat The Crusher.

He rose to fame in the early 70s after appearing on IT show Opportunity Knocks and the Royal Variety Performance.

The comedian later starred in several hit shows including The Freddie Starr Show.

He was known by fans for his eccentric and often unpredictable behaviour.

In 1986, he was famously at the centre of one of the best known newspaper headlines when The Sun splashed with: "Freddie Starr ate my hamster."

The story claimed Starr placed the small creature between two slices of bread and ate it at a friend's home after returning from a performance in Manchester.

But in his 2001 autobiography Unwrapped, Starr said the incident never took place.

Police investigated an allegation of historical sexual abuse against Starr in 2012, which he said left him "suicidal".

Starr was told in 2014 he would not be prosecuted after spending 18 months on bail.

He lost a damages claim against his accuser in the High Court in 2015.

In an interview with the Mail on Sunday, he revealed he moved to Spain following the ruling, which left him facing a bill unofficially estimated at about £1 million.

According to The Sun, Starr was found dead inside his apartment in the resort of Mijas on the Costa Del Sol.
