In a Monster Hunter digital event, Capcom revealed a free update for Monster Hunter Rise, as well as fresh details on forthcoming title Monster Hunter Stories 2: Wings of Ruin.
The Rise update, arriving on 28 April, is adding a monster load of new enemies to defeat. It includes the elder dragons Kushala Daora, Teostra and Chameleos, familiar from previous games, as well as Apex Diablos and Apex Rathalos.
A few other tweaks are also being made to the Switch exclusive RPG: Apex monsters can be challenged outside of Rampage quests; Magnamalo will join Rampage quests; layered armour can be forged; and the max hunter rank will be unlocked.
Further, new event quests are on their way and new cosmetic DLC items will be available to purchase.
An additional free update is also coming in late May, which will include even more monsters and a new ending to the story.
In our review of Rise we named it one of the best games on the Switch: “The single player might be brief, but the real fun of Monster Hunter are the friends you hunt with along the way.”
If Rise left you wanting a bit more story alongside your monster hunting, then look no further than Monster Hunter Stories 2: Wings of Ruin.
A sequel to the 2016 3DS game, it has a greater emphasis on narrative and features strategic turn-based battles.
Players must master three attack types – power, speed and technical – as well as weapon types, elemental powers and skills. Understanding the fighting style of monsters is critical in selecting the right moves to counter attacks.
Players can also target specific monster parts, just like the main series, to stop monsters in their tracks. In addition, you can team up with Monsties (tamed monsters) for double attacks and devastating kinship attacks.
Forming bonds with Monsties is a key part of the story, as you take on the role of a Monster Rider who must save their Razewing Ratha companion from a terrible prophecy.
Monster Hunter Stories 2: Wings of Ruin will be released on Switch on 9 July.
Players of both games will be able to link their save data to receive exclusive items: the Rider layered armour in Rise, and the Kamura Garb armour in Wings of Ruin.
It’s a good time to be a Nintendo and Monster Hunter fan.
