Freebies, offers and celebrations coming up across Nottinghamshire to mark National Fish and Chip Day

National Fish and Chip Day is almost upon us - and it's a day earlier than normal to honour the 80th anniversary of the D-Day landings. The nation's favourite dish is traditionally celebrated on the first Friday in June.

But it has been brought forward this year to Thursday June 6 to mark the momentous occasion in history when in 1944 Allied forces executed the largest seaborne invasion in military history, paving the way for peace during the Second World War.

Amongst Nottinghamshire's chippies celebrating is Angells Fisheries in Newark. Owner Sophie Angell said: "Our charming little shop dates back to 1914 and is known to be Newark's oldest chippy, serving the town through two world wars. We look forward to welcoming new and regular faces on this special occasion, making it a day to remember."

Sophie added: "Fish and chips played a vital role during the war, being one of the only comfort dishes left unrationed. This was made possible by the brave fishermen and farmers who continued to work despite the risks."

For one day only prices will be dropped with a fish supper, consisting of haddock, chips and sauce, for £5, presented in a traditional newspaper printed box. Chips will be reduced to 80p a portion.

The chippy will be treating members of Newark Dementia Carers Group to a traditional chippy lunch after they came out top in a local vote for a deserving charity or organisation. The winner of a kids' colour competition will also be announced on the day with a prize of free fish and chips for the family, while every entrant is receiving a free ice cream. Vintage vocalist Laura Alice will be entertaining customers visiting the shop from 5pm with a repertoire of 1940's wartime classics. The chippy will be open all day from 11.30am to 8:30pm.

Other offers on the day include:

  • The Cod's Scallops will be giving away 80 free portions of fish and chips from the chippy in Mansfield Road, Carrington. Customers will need to queue outside the click and collect window, where serving will start at 11.30am. A free open tray will be on a first come, first served basis.

  • Gills, High Road, Chilwell - fish and chips reduced to £8.

  • Sea & Earth, Mansfield Road, Woodthorpe - five fish goujons and chips for £5.
