After French president François Hollande announced that he would stand for re-election, his Socialist Party choose Benoit Hamon as its candidate.
However a former member of Hollande’s government, Emmanuel Macron will also stand in next month’s presidential vote, after setting up his own political movement.
Hamon represents the left-wing of the Socialist Party, while Macron’s appeal is more towards the centre.
Opinion polls show Macron favourite to progress to the second round vote, where he would face off against far-right National Front leader Marine Le Pen.
