Yahoo News Friends cast confirm reunion for one-off special
It's really happening – the stars from Friends are reuniting!
Not in groups of two or three and not just for an Instagram photo this time – Jennifer Aniston, Courteney Cox, Lisa Kudrow, Matt LeBlanc, Matthew Perry and David Schwimmer have officially signed up to appear together on screen again.
They are not actually going to be filming a new episode or season of the classic sitcom, but they will take part in a documentary reuniting them with series creators David Crane and Marta Kauffman to celebrate Friends' 25th anniversary on new streaming service HBO Max.
HBO Max boss Kevin Reilly made the announcement on Friday (21 February): "Guess you could call this the one where they all got back together – we are reuniting with David, Jennifer, Courteney, Matt, Lisa, and Matthew for an HBO Max special that will be programmed alongside the entire Friends library [for the US].
"I became aware of Friends when it was in the very early stages of development and then had the opportunity to work on the series many years later and have delighted in seeing it catch on with viewers generation after generation.
"It taps into an era when friends – and audiences – gathered together in real time and we think this reunion special will capture that spirit, uniting original and new fans."
The six Friends stars will earn between $2.5 million and $3 million each when they film on their old set at Stage 24 at Warner Bros. Studio in Burbank this September, according to The Hollywood Reporter.
News originally broke last year that a documentary was in the works to celebrate Friends' 25th anniversary, though the project had hit some speed bumps in recent months.
Matthew Perry reignited fan hopes last month when he tweeted that he'd have "big news" to share soon, followed by his co-star David Schwimmer coyly refusing to "confirm or deny" anything during a recent One Show appearance.
Friends co-creators David Crane and Marta Kauffman have long vowed never to properly revive the show, with Kauffman insisting "the heart of the show would be gone".
Friends airs daily on Comedy Central in the UK and is also streaming on Netflix in the UK.
