One of Friends' most hotly-debated theories has finally been settled – that's if you count fan polls anyway.

Dating app Plenty of Fish released a user poll earlier this month – which was active between August 14 and August 16 and saw 1,865 individuals take part – and thanks to The Wrap, we now have the resulting statistics.

60% of singles think the pair were on a break at the time, meaning Ross (played by David Schwimmer) didn't really cheat on Rachel (Jennifer Aniston).

However, it seems a large portion of women think otherwise, with 44% reckoning Ross was a cheater, compared to 36% of males.

It should be noted that a YouGov poll from last year gave us a similar outcome. So, really, this isn't brand new information for our favourite palaeontologist.

Meanwhile, Plenty of Fish users seemed to disagree on what it even means to be 'on a break', with the app reporting: "38% say it means open relationship while figuring things out, 33% say it means still together/monogamous and 29% say it means broken up/can date and hook up with others."

It's just a minefield out there!

Elsewhere in Friends land, last year, executive producer Kevin S Bright had his say on the whole Ross and Rachel scenario, explaining how the show's creators came up with the divisive storyline.
