Friends of a married father-of-two left with severe brain damage after a horror crash in central London have raised more than £10,000.

Adam Higgins, who is aged in his mid-20s, suffered devastating injuries after he was hit by a moped outside Blackfriars station in June.

At the time witnesses spoke of their shock at the “horrendous accident” as an air ambulance landed and rushed him to hospital.

Pedestrian Mr Higgins sustained a “traumatic brain injury” when he was thrown across the road during the morning rush hour.

He “landed hard on his head”, according to a fundraising page set up by a friend.

He was in a coma for two weeks, requiring two operations on the day of the crash and further operations due to “complications with his brain, swelling, fluid and a bleed on the brain”.

He now has a cerebral shunt in place which will remain in his brain for the rest of his life.

With Mr Higgins waiting for a space to become available at a rehabilitation centre, where he will spent about nine months, it is hoped the money being raised will help pay for travel expenses and adaptations to his home before he returns.

Mr Higgins will need to have ground floor living with wheelchair access and possibly hoists, the page says.

On the page, set by friend Kerry Boland, Mr Higgins is described as “a very hard working man who was devoted to his family and friends”.

“He was honest, loyal and very caring. He was always there for anyone that needed him,” it adds.

One person commented: “It’s so sad to see a hard working, honest guy have a hurdle like this to climb.” Another added: “This is a lovely family… it’s tragic.”
