Fulham star Ryan Sessegnon has set his sights on breaking into the England squad as one of the next generation of players trying to force their way into Gareth Southgate’s plans.

The 18-year-old is under consideration for a call-up as he prepares for his first season in the Premier League.

Southgate considered Sessegnon as a possible surprise inclusion in the World Cup squad after his outstanding season for Fulham, in which he was named EFL player of the year and helped the Cottagers secure promotion.

The left winger has admitted he was not ready to go to Russia but he hopes to be drafted in for the Euro 2020 qualifying campaign.

“I was surprised to have my name mentioned," he said. "It was good for me.

"I was excited, but I think it was too early for the World Cup. Hopefully the next one.”

Sessegnon is among of group of young English players looking to break into the England squad, including Manchester City midfielder Phil Foden and Jadon Sancho at Borussia Dortmund.

“I think at the next Euros and the next World Cup you are going to see more young players in the squad," he added.

"It is only a positive thing.”
