Fulham’s rising star Ryan Sessegnon is among the 10 athletes nominated for the BBC’s Young Sports Personality of the Year.

Sessegnon turned 18 in May and has already established himself as a crucial player for newly-promoted Fulham, for whom he has played 91 games since his debut in August 2016. The winger scored and provided two assists in the Cottagers' victorious run through the Championship Play Offs and was the first player from outside the top flight to be nominated for the PFA Young Player of the Year.

Sessegnon is the only footballer on the shortlist for the prize, which will be announced at the Radio 1 Teen Awards on Sunday. Among the other stars of the future joining him are Jack Draper, runner-up in the Boys’ Singles at Wimbledon, and James Bowen, the youngest jockey to win the Welsh Grand National.

Table-tennis player Anna Hursey, 12, is the youngest name on the shortlist. She is already the top British player at under-18 level and achieved two doubles and a singles win in this year’s Commonwealth games.

The prize was won by Manchester City midfielder Phil Foden last year after his starring role in England’s Under-17 World Cup win. Previous winners include Andy Murray, Ellie Simmonds and Tom Daley, who won in both 2009 and 2010.
