Many new drivers - or even those still learning - forget to consider car insurance when they're thinking about getting a new car. However, car insurance can be costly, varying by by almost £1,000, depending on the make and model of the vehicle, according to comparison site GoCompare shows.

The research showed that the most expensive type of car to insure costs around £1,200 on average per year, while the cheapest car to insure costs around £241. With this in mind, it's worth paying close attention to the make and model before you pick your car.

Following the research, Which? has shared the 10 most and least expensive cars to insure.

Which? shared the top 10 cheapest car makes and models to insure on average, per year according to research from GoCompare. The Peugeot 206 took the top spot, with insurance averaging £241 a year.

The Porsche Boxster came in second-cheapest at £243, while the Mazda MX-5, came in third with an average premium of £249. Below are the make and model of car, and the average cost to insure it.
