Over 40 train stations across the South East will benefit from contactless ticketing from February 2. The change will simplify key commuter lines into the capital and allow for better value fares in an effort to drive more passengers back to the railway.

The scheme will add contactless technology to 47 stations and comes as a result of £20 million of Government funding to modernise the country’s rail network. South Western Railway routes to and from Shepperton, Virginia Water and Windsor & Eton Riverside will benefit from the new system, as well as London Northwestern Railway routes serving Bletchley and St Albans Abbey.

Stations to and from Bat & Ball will come under the new ticketing scheme, as well as lines towards Sevenoaks and Shoeburyness. Alex Williams, Chief Customer and Strategy Officer at Transport for London, said the scheme will support the wider UK economy through providing easier access to rail travel.

He said: "The popularity of convenient travel via pay as you go with contactless has seen it grow and become increasingly popular across London and the surrounding areas in the ten years since it launched in London. We are delighted to be extending pay as you go with contactless to a further 47 stations on February 2."

The news follows contactless ticketing being added to six Chiltern stations last summer including High Wycombe and Beaconsfield. Within the first six months of the service, over 268,000 contactless entries and exits were reported across the six stations. The Department for Transport has stated that all passengers using tap-in tap-out services will be guaranteed to be paying the best value ticket price available on the day.
