Full list of A417 closures ahead of drivers being moved on to new stretch of road

Motorists using the A417 in Gloucestershire will experience a new road layout from next month (June) as progress continues on the A417 Missing Link scheme. National Highways needs to alter the road layout around Cowley roundabout to facilitate the next phase of crucial work.

The Government-owned company plans to install drainage, carry out excavation, and set up a contraflow at the A417 Nettleton Bottom/Cowley roundabout location. Preparations for the new contraflow, including the installation of CCTV speed cameras at Cowley roundabout, will begin the week commencing 17 June.

The following week, starting June 24, will see the contraflow put in place, along with signage alignments and new road markings. This work will be carried out during full overnight closures from 9pm to 6am, Monday to Friday.

The new bypass will provide full dual-carriageway access from the M4 at Swindon to the M5 at Brockworth, ending the notorious single-carriageway stretch around Birdlip.

The Air Balloon and Cowley roundabouts will remain, but for local traffic. Motorists will be able to drive from Gloucester to Swindon on the A417/419 with no junctions, roundabouts or traffic lights.
