A portion of the Homebase business was saved by billionaire Chris Dawson, owner of The Range and Wilko. The rescue deal aimed to preserve up to 70 stores and save 1,600 jobs along with the Homebase brand, leaving 74 branches and approximately 2,000 employees in jeopardy.

A week later, Teneo, the administrators for Homebase, put the 74 stores up for sale, including some in Scotland and Ireland.

Alex Simpkin, chief executive of CDS Superstores, owner of The Range, commented: "We've stepped in following the sad demise of the much-loved Homebase brand, which has had a long and previously successful history of helping UK households with their DIY projects and gardening needs, for over 45-years."

He assured that the Homebase brand would remain operational online and the acquired stores would maintain the Homebase name in the near future.
