DIY chain Homebase could be forced to close a number of stores after the firm fell into administration. There are currently 141 shops across the UK, according to the company's website.

A number will be turned into Sainsbury's supermarkets after the company purchased them earlier this year. But 130 face a risk of closure as Homebase is preparing to line up Teneo to handle an insolvency process for its UK operation.

Over the summer, Homebase owner Hilco Capital was due to initiate a formal process to sell the chain with The Range making an offer to purchase the retailer. However, the talks didn't lead to a sale.

Homebase managing director Damian McGloughlin wrote to suppliers saying it was trading "behind where we planned to be" and would begin an "active sale process" to seek new investment in August this year.

The Telegraph reports that Chris Dawson, who owns and runs The Range homeware outlets, is working on a takeover deal to take as many as 70 Homebase stores into his shopping empire. The retail tycoon, nicknamed the "Del Boy billionaire", is said to be working with Teneo to preserve nearly 1,600 jobs across the UK.

The Homebase stores in the West Midlands are located in:

  • Bromsgrove - Brooks Retail Park

  • Cannock - Orbital Retail Centre

  • Coventry - Gallagher Retail Park

  • Kings Heath - Findlay Road, High Street

  • Oldbury - Oldbury Ringway

  • Selly Oak - Harborne Lane

  • Sutton Coldfield - Chester Road

  • Telford - Wrekin Retail Park

  • Wolverhampton - St Johns Retail Park

  • Worcester Blackpole - Elgar Retail Park

It was announced earlier this year that the Sutton Coldfield and Bromsgrove stores would be made into Sainsbury's supermarkets. There has not been official word yet on the fait of the other stores.
