A total of eight Homebase stores in Kent could be among those at risk of closure after the chain collapsed into administration, putting thousands of jobs at risk. It was reported on Tuesday (November 12) that all 130 branches of the DIY and garden retailer could be shut.

But the owner of The Range and Wilko, Chris Dawson has acquired the Homebase brand name, intellectual property, and up to 70 of its UK stores, saving more than a thousand jobs.

While it is set to continue trading under the Homebase banner for the time being, the stores will then be turned into The Range stores. The Homebase brand will continue online.

This comes after the owner of Homebase, Hilco, was unable to find a buyer and was said be preparing for insolvency. While Mr Dawson rescued some of the stores and jobs, around 2,000 workers and 49 stores remain at risk, the Mail Online reports.

This includes eight stores in Kent.

Below is a full list of the Homebase stores in Kent which are at risk:

  • Broadstairs

  • Chatham

  • Folkestone

  • Herne Bay

  • Maidstone

  • Sevenoaks

  • Sittingbourne

  • Tunbridge Wells

Michael Lynch is a partner at law firm DMH Stallard and an insolvency and business restructuring expert. He said: "Hilco appears to have drawn a line under its Homebase venture.

"After six years of navigating some quite difficult market terrain, it probably felt as though its risk to capital in supporting the business was too great, as a result in market forces appearing to have driven down trade. Hilco’s rebuild, like many projects, has come to end."
