Full list of road closures and roadworks across the North East this week

There are a number of road closures in place across the North East this week that drivers should be aware of.

Some roads are closed while others have lane closures. Temporary traffic measures or diversion routes may also be in place on roads in the region. Motorists are urged to make allowances for these closures and alter their travel arrangements if necessary.

If you're planning to travel through Newcastle, Gateshead, Northumberland, North Tyneside, South Tyneside, Sunderland or County Durham, take a look at the list below to see whether your journey will be affected.

Newcastle

• Temporary traffic lights due to electricity work on Raby Street near St Peter's Social Club, Byker. Until 6pm on November 25.

• Temporary traffic lights due to gas main work on Blackwell Avenue, Walker, in both directions at Westbourne Avenue. Until November 28.

• Lane closed due to emergency repairs and gas main work on Rothbury Terrace Westbound, Heaton, from Whitefield Terrace to Ebor Street. Until November 29.

• Temporary traffic lights due to emergency repairs and gas main work on Morpeth Road, Dinnington, in both directions at Horton Grange. Until November 29.

• Temporary traffic lights due to electricity work on A186 Walker Road near Rodney Street, Byker. Until December 2.

• Lane closed due to emergency repairs and gas main work on The B1318 Great North Road Southbound, Gosforth, from Brunton Lane to Newlands Avenue. Until December 2.

• Traffic taking turns due to gas main work on Broadmead Way, Scotswood, in both directions at Yewcroft Avenue. Until December 4.

• One lane closed due to roadworks on The A1058 Coast Road Westbound between Derby Gardens and Benfield Road (The Wills Building), Heaton. Expect delays. Until December 6.

• Temporary traffic lights due to gas main work on Hollywood Avenue at Hollywood Crescent, Gosforth. Until December 6.

• Temporary traffic lights due to roadworks on Benfield Road, Walkergate, in both directions near Jasmine Close. Until December 20.

• Lane closed due to gas main work on Woodstock Road, Scotswood, in both directions at Armstrong Road. Until December 20.

• Temporary traffic lights due to gas main work on A191 Silver Lonnen at Henshaw Place, East Denton. Until January 31, 2025.

• Temporary traffic lights due to gas main work on B1312 Shields Road, Byker, in both directions at Addison Road. Until February 23, 2025.

• Pilgrim Street Southbound in Newcastle city centre closed due to long-term roadworks between Blackett Street and A167 (Swan House Roundabout). Until March 2025.

• Pilgrim Street Southbound in Newcastle city centre closed in both directions due to long-term roadworks from Blackett Street to A167(M). Until March 2025.

• Queen Victoria Road Southbound in Newcastle city centre closed due to roadworks from B1318 Claremont Road to Richardson Road. Until March 2025.

• Market Street One Way Street closed due to long-term roadworks from Pilgrim Street to John Dobson Street. Until March 17, 2025.

• One lane closed due to roadworks on A167 Tyne Bridge in both directions between Hawks Road and Swan House Roundabout. Until April 2025.

• Temporary traffic lights due to roadworks on B1311 Elswick Road at Grainger Park Road, Elswick. Until May 22, 2025.

• Traffic taking turns due to gas main work on Beacon Drive at Willows Close, Hazlerigg. Until May 29, 2025.

• Dunstanburgh Road at St Anthonys closed due to roadworks from Grasmere Avenue to Monkchester Road, Walker. Until July 2025.

Gateshead

• Barlow Lane closed in both directions due to water main work from the pub (Barlow) to Knobbyends Lane, Winlaton. Until November 26.

• Temporary traffic lights due to emergency repairs and gas main work on Blaydon Bank, Winlaton, in both directions at Park Avenue. Until November 27.

• Temporary traffic lights due to roadworks on A167 Durham Road at Harras Bank, Birtley. Until November 29.

• Lane closed due to emergency repairs and gas main work on Hospital Drive, Hebburn, in both directions at A185 Victoria Road West. Until December 2.

• Temporary traffic lights due to roadworks on Brighton Road at Balfour Street, Bensham. Expect delays. Until 4pm on December 6.

• Traffic taking turns due to electricity work on Church Road at B1296 Old Durham Road, Sheriff Hill. Until 6pm on December 27.

• One lane closed due to roadworks on A167 Tyne Bridge in both directions between Hawks Road and Swan House Roundabout. Until April 2025.

• Narrow lanes and speed restriction of 50mph due to major widening works on A1 Western Bypass Westbound from J65 (Birtley) to J67 (Coalhouse Roundabout). Expect delays. Work to create an extra lane in each direction. Until May 2025.

Northumberland

• Bridge Street Eastbound, Blyth, closed due to roadworks from Coomassie Road to B1327 Union Street. Until November 29.

• Temporary traffic lights due to roadworks on A193 Renwick Road near Claremont Terrace, Blyth. Expect delays. Until January 20, 2025.

• Stamfordham Road in both directions closed due to gas main work from B6323 Ponteland Road to Western Way, High Callerton. Until February 21, 2025.

• Common Bank at Bearsbridge closed in both directions due to roadworks between the A686 and Thornley Gate. Until May 2025.

North Tyneside

• No through traffic allowed due to water main work on Mortimer Terrace, Holywell, in both directions at Whitley Place. Until November 29.

• Temporary traffic lights due to emergency repairs and gas main work on Western Way, Whitley Bay, in both directions at Grenada Drive. Until December 2.

• Traffic taking turns due to gas main work on Elgin Avenue at Perth Gardens, Howdon. Until January 22, 2025.

• Temporary traffic lights due to gas main work on Churchill Street at Simonside Avenue, Howdon. Until January 24 2025.

• Tyne Street in North Shields closed due to roadworks from Stephenson Street to Norfolk Street. Until January 31, 2025.

• Traffic taking turns due to gas main work on Windsor Drive at Ilford Road, Howdon. Until February 5, 2025.

• Contraflow and roadworks on A19 Tyne Tunnel in both directions from A194 Leam Lane (Lindisfarne Roundabout, Jarrow) to A193 Tynemouth Road (Howdon Roundabout, North Shields). On Sundays until March 2025.

• Lane closed due to roadworks on Atkinson Street at Hugh Street, Wallsend. Until March 7, 2025.

• One-way system and long-term roadworks on Beverley Terrace and Grand Parade Northbound from Grand Parade to Marden Avenue, Cullercoats. Until April 2025.

• Grand Parade and Beverley Terrace Southbound closed due to long-term roadworks from Marden Avenue to Beach Road, Cullercoats. Until April 2025.

• Temporary traffic lights due to roadworks on Wooley Street at Wallsend bus station. Until May 2025.

• Temporary traffic lights due to roadworks on A193 The Links near Eastbourne Avenue, Whitley Bay. Expect delays. Until October 15, 2025.

South Tyneside

• Temporary traffic lights due to roadworks on A183 Coast Road between Mowbray Road and Kingsway, South Shields. Expect delays. Until December 13.

• Contraflow and roadworks on A19 Tyne Tunnel in both directions from A194 Leam Lane (Lindisfarne Roundabout, Jarrow) to A193 Tynemouth Road (Howdon Roundabout, North Shields). On Sundays until March 2025.

Sunderland

• Temporary traffic lights due to roadworks on A183 Harbour View from Givens Street to Roker Avenue. Expect delays. Until November 29.

• Traffic taking turns due to gas main work on Westernmoor in both directions around Blackfell Road, Washington. Until December 2.

• Temporary traffic lights due to roadworks on B1405 European Way at Pallion Subway. Until February 24, 2025.

• Burdon Lane in Ryhope closed due to roadworks from Nettles Lane (Ryhope) to Burdon Road (Burdon). Until May 2025.

• Rutherford Road in Washington closed due to roadworks from Rainhill Road to Marwell Drive. Until August 2025.

• Easington Street in both directions closed due to roadworks from Sheepfolds North to Richmond Street. Until September 2025.

County Durham

• No through traffic allowed due to roadworks on B6299, Sunniside, in both directions between Moss Inn and Asquith Interiors shop. Until December 1.

• A19 Southbound exit slip road to Seaton Lane closed due to roadworks at B1404 Seaton Lane (Seaton Interchange). Until 6am on December 9.

• Trowsdale Street, Catchgate, closed in both directions due to water main work from Swan Street to Laburnum Terrace. Until December 10.

• Wallnook Lane closed in both directions due to roadworks between Front Terrace and Firs Terrace, Langley Park. Until December 31.
  

• Malvern Crescent closed due to roadworks from Ryton Crescent, Dalton le Dale, to Queensbury Road, Seaham. Until June 2025.
