A number of flood alerts remain in place in Derbyshire after a day of disruption on the roads. Heavy rain which has been falling over the last 48 hours led to the closure of some main roads, including the A617 at Chesterfield and Heath, which delayed motorists traveling in and around the North-Derbyshire town this morning (Tuesday, October 1).

The heavy rain has also affected parts of the A52 Brian Clough way with one lane shut after reports of 'severe' flooding between its junctions of A6007 Ilkeston Road for Bramcote and the B6003 Toton Lane for Bardills Island and Stapleford, just over the Nottinghamshire border.

The Met Office has stated that there will be light rain falling in Derby for the rest of tonight before a damp start to tomorrow (Wednesday, October 2), however, they are not expecting the heavy rainfall that we saw in today's forecast. With sunny intervals predicted for Wednesday afternoon and with a brighter end to the week.

Thursday is looking much better with bright sunshine throughout the day from sunset through to dusk. Temperatures will be around 15C and Friday will be warmer, with some sunshine, at 16C during daylight hours.

A decision was taken to close the A617 from its junction with the M1 to the Horns Bridge roundabout at about 9pm last night, following rain throughout much of Monday. Derbyshire police warned that the closure would remain in place overnight and into the morning.

Motorists were warned to avoid the area but inevitably traffic was hit by the closure as drivers made heir way to work in the early morning rush hour, causing long delays for many. The road was finally reopened this morning at about 9am. Parkside Community School in Boythorpe Avenue, Chesterfield was closed on Tuesday.

Following the devastating Storm Babet floods last year - which the people of Derbyshire will be all too familiar with - Derbyshire Fire and Rescue issued some important advice ahead of possible heavy rain and flooding. A spokesperson for the fire service said: "With more heavy rain expected across Derbyshire today we are once again asking motorists to take extra care."

A flood warning was lifted from the River Derwent in Darley Abbey (Folly Road) at 8am this morning, and later removed from the River Rother at Renishaw and the River Whitting at Old Whittington and Sheepbridge.

At one stage, more than 20 flood alerts were in place across the county in areas such as Bottle Brook, Lower Derwent, Lower Dove and the River Amber. This evening (Tuesday, October 1), the six flood alerts listed below remain in place.
