Liam struggled to compose himself as he narrowly missed out on a place in the Great British Bake Off semi-final.

The amateur baker was sent packing from the famous tent by Paul Hollywood and Prue Leith after failing to impress them with his showstopper.

Host Sandi Toksvig looked close to tears as she announced the bad news, which caused Liam to break down.

Speaking about crashing out of the competition he said: “In all fairness I can look back tomorrow morning and think ‘yh I smashed it.’

“Onwards and upwards now. This is just the beginning. I’m coming for Paul Hollywood’s job in a few years time.”

Hollywood said: “I feel so sorry for Liam he’s done really well to reach the quarter final but he had a bad showstopper and that’s what it came down to.”

The decision left viewers vowing to turn their backs on the Channel 4 show, with many claiming Kate should have been given the boot after two consecutive weeks of questionable bakes.

One viewer tweeted: "WELL THAT’S BAKE OFF DONE FOR THIS YEAR THANKS FOR WATCHING GUYS."

Another wrote: "I'M NOT WATCHING IT ANYMORE AIN'T WORTH IT I DONT CARE WHO WINS. LIAM WAS THE REAL WINNER #GBBO."
