Liverpool booked their place in the fourth round of the Carabao Cup with a convincing 5-1 win over West Ham United on Wednesday evening. Cody Gakpo and Diogo Jota scored a brace apiece either side of an effort from Mohamed Salah as the Reds made their numerical superiority count after Edson Alvarez had been sent off in the second period.

The Reds will now meet Brighton & Hove Albion in the fourth round as they aim to secure a record-breaking 11th League Cup crown this term in Arne Slot's first campaign as head coach.

But you knew all of that, right? What you might have missed was a series of intriguing subplots at Anfield on the night.

Here, the ECHO takes a look back at some of the 'moments missed' on the night as Slot's side recorded their biggest win of his early tenure.

New Mac Allister song

After Saturday's 3-0 win against Bournemouth, a video of Liverpool supporters in the pub paying homage to Alexis Mac Allister in style began to circulate online.

The handful of fans in question could be heard debuting something of a brand new song in honour of the Argentina international that also referenced Lionel Messi, a certain 4-0 win over Barcelona at Anfield, and none other than the late, great Diego Maradona.

"Maradona was good, but he was off his head, and Messi was all right until Tuesday night, when he played the Reds," begins the ditty. "But Mac Allister, oh Mac Allister, he's the best there's been, from the Argentine, oh Mac Allister."

And after the 2022 World Cup winner almost scored one of the goals of the season so far when his 25-yard thunderbolt was tipped on to the post by goalkeeper Lukasz Fabianski, the song was given what was thought to be its debut on the Kop.

The terrace anthem was not quite booming and it may take some time before more people are aware of its existence and lyrics but it was a passable effort and given the catchy nature of it, it is likely to become a fans' favourite soon enough.

All together now: Oh Mac Allister....

Lopetegui suffers rare injury

With another defeat for his new club and the heaviest drubbing of the campaign to date, Julen Lopetegui was kicked when he was down when injury was added to insult at Anfield.

The West Ham boss, who is struggling having replaced David Moyes over the summer, picked up a calf injury while patrolling his technical area on the night. It's not a unique occurrence given Jurgen Klopp picked up a hamstring problem during a 4-3 win over Tottenham Hotspur the season before last but manager's suffering fitness concerns must be a rare sight.

Asked about his own personal struggles after the game by Sky Sports, Lopetegui was in no mood to offer a full diagnosis of his setback, curtly stating "I have had better days" before walking off.

In the press conference itself, the Irons boss was only marginally more forthcoming, revealing: "I have one little injury in my calf." Lopetegui won't want to rush back to Anfield in a hurry.

Nunez fumes

It wouldn't be a 'moments missed' piece without the sight of someone losing their rag and that happened in the first half when Darwin Nunez charged into former Liverpool striker Danny Ings.

The Uruguay international was earning plenty of praise for his tracking back and defensive work during the game but one piece of defending saw him barrel into Ings and concede a free-kick near the touchline.

Clearly disagreeing with the decision, Nunez fumed at the referee's assistant before making a diving motion about how easy Ings went to ground. It was enough to prompt unflattering comparisons with Andy Carroll from the Hammers fans (you know the chant), but it was water off a duck's back for the Reds' No.9.

His evening might not have ended with a goal, but it was Nunez who had the last laugh, despite his obvious frustrations at the decision at the time.

Jota celebration explained

Jota's opportunistic equaliser saw him wheel away with something of a new celebration. The Portugal international put his thumb in his mouth after his quick reactions saw him pounce on Federico Chiesa's scuffed volley to nod home.

The celebration was down to the fact that his partner is due to give birth imminently and, as such, Jota wanted to recognise the soon-to-be new arrival. Congratulations, Diogo.
