Gabby Logan worried her son would die young after her brother passed away at 15

Gabby Logan has admitted she feared her own son would die before his 16th birthday due to memories of her brother's passing at the age of just 15.

Logan's brother Daniel collapsed and died in 1992 while playing football with dad Terry Yorath — a former Leeds United star — and was later found to have had a heart condition.

The sports presenter told the Diary of a CEO podcast — reported via the Mirror — that her fears intensified as her twins Reuben and Lois got closer to their 16th birthdays.

"When my son was nearly 16 – a few days from Daniel’s birthday – I realised that I’d been worried about him not being 16 because Daniel never got there,” she said.

Logan added that she had "a fear I was going to repeat history" and also became obsessed with footballers' dates of birth when she started work because they would often be the same age as Daniel.

She said: "I knew he might be playing in that match. You wonder: ‘What kind of player would he have been? I wonder if he’d have had a girlfriend by now, or met somebody he wanted to marry, or now I wonder if he’d have children'."

Logan said she was "almost waiting for that next [terrible] thing" to happen to her, until she spoke to a therapist who helped her get back on track.

"It kind of really stopped me in my tracks and I thought: ‘I’ve got to stop believing something else is coming down the tracks that I’m going to have to deal with’," she added.

Logan previously spoke about the effect of her brother's passing on TV show Freeze the Fear, saying "the ripples of [his death] continue through all of our lives now".

She added: "It's almost like you lose a limb and have to work out how to use the rest of your body, because it never grows back, that limb, so life never is the same again. It's just a different kind of life."

Logan was a competitive gymnast in her youth, representing Wales at the Commonwealth Games in 1990 before moving into a broadcasting career.

She joined Sky Sports in 1996 before jumping to ITV to front their football coverage and later moving to BBC Sport in 2007, fronting coverage of various sports.
