Gabby Logan had to adjust her morning routine after realising it was sending her glucose levels “sky-high”.

The BBC Sport presenter decided to try wearing a blood glucose monitor to see how her daily routine affected her fitness goals. It was there she realised she was making a simple mistake in the mornings.

When looking at the difference between having six or eight hours sleep, the 51-year-old noticed the real impact actually came from what she consumed afterwards. In particular, Gabby found her morning coffee was having a real impact on her blood sugar levels.

Speaking on her Mid-Point podcast, she said: “With less sleep, the natural instinct when you wake up previously is to go ‘oh I haven’t slept as well, I’m going to have two cups of coffee to try and wake myself up’.

“But what I realised is that coffee on its own, for me sends my glucose levels really high, so trying to have my coffee alongside my breakfast is really important.”

Dr Amy McKenzie, from Lingo, a company that makes blood glucose trackers, replied: “Sometimes people will find that their glucose sense will be a little bit higher when they haven’t slept as much, or as well, so being really thoughtful about that breakfast and setting yourself up with the protein and the veggies to set yourself up for a good day is really important too.”

Gabby says monitoring her glucose levels also prompted her to change her daily snacking. She has now swapped from a yoghurt rice cake to a handful of nuts throughout the day in between meals.

Dr Amy added: “When you prepare and have those nuts available you make the good decisions and then you’ve made that investment on how you’re going to feel that night, the next day, and long term.”

Gabby meanwhile concluded that having a healthy snack means she makes better decisions when it comes to her evening meals too, including swapping carbohydrates out for vegetables and proteins.
