Just as Star Trek is getting a new lease of life on TV, so is its affectionate parody Galaxy Quest.

Amazon announced the continuation of the franchise back in 2015, with the original film's cast ready to sign on, but the tragic passing of Alan Rickman at the beginning of 2016 derailed those plans.

Now The Hollywood Reporter states that a new writer has been brought on board to breathe new life into the project.

Comedian Paul Scheer, who is known for The League, Veep and Fresh Off the Boat, will now be penning the series instead of the original film's writer Robert Gordon.

It is unknown at this time whether Scheer's appointment will steer the series in a new direction with fresh characters, rather than bringing the original movie's actors back.

Tim Allen, who played the lead role of Jason Nesmith in the film, recently had his sitcom Last Man Standing cancelled after six seasons. A fan petition gathered over 100,000 signatures, but it wasn't enough to save it. What we're saying is, even if actors like Sigourney Weaver aren't free, Amazon should definitely get Allen on board.

Another affectionate Star Trek parody series that's in the works and coming a lot sooner than Galaxy Quest (September 10) is The Orville, from Family Guy and American Dad's Seth MacFarlane.
