Samsung could be planning to include desktop-style functionality in the Galaxy S8 if leaks regarding a dock accessory are to be believed.

Images sourced by WinFuture.de suggest that Samsung is about to announce the "DeX Station".

The DeX looks like more than a standard dock. In addition to charging, the dock will allow video output from the phone from "HDMI to 4K" resolutions, and provide an Ethernet internet connection running at a max of 100Mbs.

Most intriguing of all is the inclusion of "Galaxy Desktop functionality". It sounds like the S8 will be able to power a full desktop UI.

The inclusion of a cooling fan seems prudent. When powering 4K output, the S8 processor is going to get seriously hot.

Internal slides leaked elsewhere point to the same conclusion: the S8 can fulfil the role of desktop tower.

This suite of functionality would explain why the dock costs €149.99 (approximately £130). Who knows whether the S8 could power a desktop setup without the dock?

Even if so, the power, high-speed internet and outputs, and cradle provided by the dock would probably make the transition between one state and another smoother.

Our guess is that mobile to desktop functionality may look something like the Nintendo Switch going between handheld and home console modes. Just pop it in the dock and the feed automatically moves to the monitor and control to the mouse and keyboard.

None of this has been confirmed by Samsung, but we expect details of the DeX Station will become available on March 29 during the company's Galaxy S8 event.
