The seventh season of Game of Thrones is almost upon us but for this scoop, we're taking it back to season 2.

Indeed, Aidan Gillen, who plays the devious Littlefinger in the HBO series, has just confirmed one of the show's longest-standing fan theories.

Speaking to Entertainment Weekly, the actor verified that Littlefinger did probably recognise Arya Stark when he saw her at Harrenhal way back when.

At the time, she was working incognito as a servant girl for the now deceased Tywin Lannister (Charles Dance) and nervously spilt wine during Littlefinger's visit.

The duo had met before in season one, although it was unclear at the time if Littlefinger recognised Arya when he saw her again.

Gillen, however, says he very much did. So why keep quiet?

"It was unclear if he recognised her or not, but I have my own thoughts on that," he said.

"Yes, I did recognise her - I just didn't say anything or do anything about it."

During the interview, Gillen also majorly hinted the sexual tension between Sansa and Littlefinger is far from resolved as we enter season 7.

Does this mean they're going to bang?

"I finished last season on a promising note by laying my cards on the table - at least to Sansa," he explained.

"I was [sowing seeds of doubt about Jon Snow] throughout my appearances in season 6, and, yeah, that will continue. It's pretty obvious what my game is there.

"We're playing out that final exchange in the Great Hall in Winterfell. But the same time my character is becoming quite aware that Sansa is becoming as bright as me and just as wary of my manipulations of her."

He added: "They're onto each other. They use each other. They enjoy each other. And they keep a lot from each other.

"There are all kinds of mixed things going on with Littlefinger and his relationship with Sansa, so watching her grow in stature is quite enjoyable."

Game of Thrones returns to HBO on Sunday, July 16 and Monday, July 17 on Sky Atlantic in the UK.
