Game of Thrones boss joins Amazon's Lord of the Rings series

Game of Thrones boss Bryan Cogman has joined Amazon’s Lord of the Rings adaptation as a series consultant.

Cogman worked on Game of Thrones as an executive producer and has been described as the show’s ”third head” – the other two being showrunners DB Weiss and David Benioff.

Variety reports that Cogman will work alongside JD Payne and Patrick McKay, who are writing and developing the forthcoming series for Amazon.

Cogman started off as an assistant to the showrunner on Game of Thrones and was promoted thanks to his encyclopedic knowledge of George RR Martin’s fantasy world.

He recently wrote two episodes for season eight: the premiere and the second episode, titled “A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms”.

Cogman was also developing one of the five prequel series to Game of Thrones but confirmed earlier this year that the project was no longer moving forward.

Amazon has previously confirmed rumours that their Lord Of The Rings series will take place before the events of Peter Jackson’s trilogy. The streaming service’s adaptation of JRR Tolkien’s work will be set during the fictional Second Age. Jackson’s trilogy took place during the Third Age.

The Second Age covers a time period of 3,441 years. During this time, Sauron forged the Ring Of Power, with the Second Age coming to an end following his defeat at the hands of the King of Gonder, Isildur.

There is no word yet on casting or a release date.
