Amazon's big-budget TV adaptation of Lord of the Rings has welcomed Bryan Cogman to the team as a series consultant.

As reported by Variety, Cogman's involvement with the Middle-earth project makes a lot of sense. After all, he's just spent quite a number of years immersed in another fantasy realm over at HBO – Game of Thrones.

His most recent work on that show was writing season eight's second episode 'A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms'.

Cogman will work with the Lord of the Rings writing team of Patrick McKay and JD Payne, who were announced as series developers almost a year ago.

We're starting to think Cogman just really likes dragons...

Meanwhile, Cogman recently confirmed that his proposed Thrones spin-off has been dropped by HBO, with the broadcaster deciding to go down a different avenue instead.

"My prequel show is not happening and will not happen, HBO decided to go a different way," he explained. "I'm working with Amazon now and helping them out with their shows. So, it is a goodbye. I am done with Westeros. It's wonderfully bittersweet.

"I'll certainly miss it, but I'm excited to go out on my own and try to be in the captain's chair of my own projects, armed with everything I've learned. I've learned more than I could possibly imagine from eight seasons of this thing."

Game of Thrones aired on HBO in the US, and you can also catch up on the show via Hulu. Viewers in the UK can catch up via Sky Atlantic and NOW TV.
