Game of Thrones, RuPaul's Drag Race and Marvelous Mrs. Maisel went home as major winners from the 70th annual Emmy Awards on Monday night (September 17).

HBO's Game of Thrones was honoured with the night's top award when it won its third-ever Outstanding Drama series trophy, topping The Americans, The Crown, The Handmaid's Tale, Stranger Things, This Is Us and Westworld.

"Writing for these actors is the honor of a lifetime but we didn't invent these characters. That is George R.R. Martin. The show could not be without the mad genius of George," showrunner David Benioff told the star-studded crowd. "Thank you for letting us take care of your people."

Peter Dinklage also won the Outstanding Supporting Actor race for his portrayal of Tyrion Lannister. This time, he remembered to thank his wife right off the bat, after missing her in his acceptance speech years ago.

"Thank you, Erica, for putting up with me. I'm very temperamental and I love you very much," he told her.

The Crown's Claire Foy dedicated her Outstanding Lead Actress in a Drama Series win to co-star Matt Smith, before admitting it was bittersweet to win just as she was exiting the show.

"I had the most extraordinary two-and-a-half years of my life - I was given a role I never thought I'd get a chance to play," she said.

In the comedy categories, it was almost a clean sweep for Amazon's Marvelous Mrs. Maisel. Rachel Brosnahan and Alex Borstein won for Lead and Supporting Actress, while series creator Amy Sherman-Palladino collected Outstanding Director, Outstanding Writing and Outstanding Comedy Series.

Sherman-Palladino was censored during her acceptance speech for dropping an F-bomb accidentally as she joked about her crew taking away New Yorkers' parking spaces while filming the show.

RuPaul's Drag Race ended a multi-year winning streak for The Voice US in the Outstanding Reality-Competition Program category, while RuPaul also won for Outstanding Host.

"We are so happy to present this show," RuPaul beamed on stage. "I would like to thank [you] on behalf of the 140 drag queens that we have released into the wild!"

The night also included a row on social media over its lack of diverse winners, as well as a live on-air marriage proposal from one of the winners.

The 70th Primetime Emmy Awards was hosted by Saturday Night Live's Michael Che and Colin Jost from the Microsoft Theater in Downtown Los Angeles, airing live in the US on NBC.
