‘Game of Thrones’ Fans Will Recognize the New Prince Philip on ‘The Crown’

He may have played a religious man in both Game of Thrones and The Two Popes, but now Jonathan Pryce will dip his toes into the waters of royalty in Netflix’s final two seasons of The Crown. Pryce will play Prince Philip, opposite Imelda Staunton’s Queen Elizabeth II and Lesley Manville’s Princess Margaret.

“I am delighted to be working with Netflix again,” Pryce said in a statement released on The Crown’s official Instagram page. “The positive experience I had making The Two Popes has given me the confidence to tackle the daunting prospect of portraying Prince Philip. To be doing so with Peter Morgan in the Company of Imelda and Lesley will be a joy.”

Pryce, who played the High Sparrow in Thrones and Pope Francis in The Two Popes, was nominated for an Oscar and a Golden Globe for his portrayal of the latter. He and his Thrones costars were also nominated for the Screen Actors Guild Award for Outstanding Performance by an Ensemble Cast in a Drama Series in both 2016 and 2017.

Pryce also isn’t the only Thrones alum to step into the role of Prince Philip.

Tobias Menzies, who played Edmure Tully in the HBO fantasy, currently plays Philip.

In July, Netflix renewed The Crown for a sixth season after show creator Peter Morgan said the series would end with Season 5. “At the outset I had imagined The Crown running for six seasons, but now that we have begun work on the stories for Season 5, it has become clear to me that this is the perfect time and place to stop," he initially told BuzzFeed News in January.

However, Morgan told The New York Times in July, “As we started to discuss the story lines for Series 5, it soon became clear that in order to do justice to the richness and complexity of the story we should go back to the original plan and do six seasons.” He clarified, “To be clear, Series 6 will not bring us any closer to present day — it will simply enable us to cover the same period in greater detail.”

Fans are still waiting for the release of the fourth season, in which Olivia Colman plays Queen Elizabeth II. And now that we know Staunton, Manville, and Pryce are waiting in the wings, we can’t wait for the final two seasons to arrive.
