Game of Thrones star Lena Headey has revealed her "dream" death for Cersei Lannister after that divisive ending.

In the penultimate episode of its final season, Headey's character met her untimely end when Cersei and her brother Jaime were crushed to death by a pile of rubble as they tried to escape King's Landing.

Previously speaking about Cersei's final moments, Headey said she wanted a "better death" for her character, even suggesting that Cersei meet her maker during a fight scene.

Now elaborating on her hopes for Cersei's demise, Headey opened up to The Hollywood Reporter about what her ideal storyline would have looked like.

"I think all of us did, to be honest," she said when asked if she wanted more for Cersei in the final season. "Because you start trying to write the story yourself. And [Arya Stark actress Maisie Williams] and I would fantasize about a Cersei and Arya showdown; that she would come back as Jaime. That was our dream. But they made different choices."

Speaking about the work involved behind the scenes, Headey said she understands why showrunners made the choices they made when under pressure to complete the complicated mix of stories.

"Exactly, " she said. "I think in hindsight, everybody understands that. You’re in it, and you’ve been so invested, there’s a moment of, 'Why?' But I absolutely get it."

In a past interview, the actress echoed these sentiments saying: "I just think they couldn't have pleased everyone. No matter what they did, I think there was going to be some big comedown from the climb."

Following the final series of Game of Thrones, HBO treated fans to a prequel series titled House of the Dragon, a show Headey says she is yet to watch.

When asked if she had watched the spin-off series, Headey said: "Nah." And when quizzed if it would be too weird to watch, she said: "Too weird. Yeah."
