‘The Crown’ Reigns Victorious Over ‘Bridgerton’ at the 2021 Emmy Awards

The results are in, and we have to admit, we totally saw this one coming.

Tonight, The Crown brought home the Emmy Award for Outstanding Drama Series at the 73rd annual ceremony.

The series was nominated against a slew of our all-time favorites, including The Boys, Bridgerton, The Handmaid’s Tale, Lovecraft Country, The Mandalorian, Pose and This Is Us.

This particular category has undergone several name changes since its debut in 1951. Although it was originally called Best Dramatic Show, the name was later changed to Best Dramatic Series before getting split into two separate groups: Best Dramatic Anthology Series, and Best Dramatic Series with Continuing Characters.

It underwent two more name changes—Outstanding Program Achievement in the Field of Drama and Outstanding Dramatic Series or Outstanding Series, Drama—before settling on the name it has today.

Previous winners in the Outstanding Drama Series category include Succession, Game of Thrones, The Handmaid’s Tale, Breaking Bad, Homeland, Mad Men, The Sopranos, 24, Lost, The West Wing, The Practice, Law & Order, ER, NYPD Blue, Picket Fences, Northern Exposure, L.A. Law, thirtysomething, Cagney & Lacey, Hill Street Blues, Lou Grant, The Rockford Files, Upstairs, Downstairs, Police Story, The Waltons, Elizabeth R, The Bold Ones: The Senator, Marcus Welby, M.D., NET Playhouse, Mission: Impossible and The Fugitive.

Congratulations to the entire cast and crew, who could probably go for an afterparty right about now.
