Game of Thrones spin-off: HBO says there is an 'embarrassment of riches' to choose from

Game of Thrones may soon be dead, wrapping up its eighth and final season, but Westeros won't be departing our TV screens any time soon.

HBO currently has five different spin-off shows in the works; a total expansion of the universe, with no existing character making an appearance. With that vague of an approach to Game of Thrones' future, it seems like pretty much anything could be possible here.

Writers Max Borenstein (Kong: Skull Island), Jane Goldman (Kingsman), Brian Helgeland (A Knight's Tale), and Carly Wray (Mad Men) have all been hired to work on the spin-offs, collaboarting closely with author George R.R. Martin to delve into the mythos and history of Westeros.

The network, however, has kept close to its chest what exactly these spin-offs will entail. HBO's CEO Richard Plepler teased the potential scope at an event (via Variety), but beyond that?

"No. Other than to say it’s a fantastic group of writers and talent, most of whom have lived inside the Thrones eco-system so are very, very familiar with its intricacies," he stated.

"I think we will find with this embarrassment of [writing] riches an exciting property for us to moves forward with. We are looking some things, I have read a couple of early bibles and I’m excited about what I’ve seen."

However, HBO has made it clear they don't necessarily intend all five shows in development to actually make it to production, with this period seeemingly being more focused on exploration and experimentation.

Don't expect to hear much about their plans in the near future, with the focus (for now) remaining tightly on season 8 and the epic conclusion of Game of Thrones.
