Like any Marvel film worth its salt, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 2 hired a veritable army of stunt performers to bring its blockbuster action to life.

But writer/director James Gunn has revealed that a terrible mistake was made in regards to Zoe Saldana's Gamora and her stunt doubles.

Behold the unspeakable horror of the Gamora stunt masks!

As Gunn states, the masks were judged both too "unwieldy" and "horrifyingly scary" to use in the film, and were ditched for simple green paint and the occasional use of CGI.

There's clearly a trend at Marvel for unsettling masks, as Thor actor Chris Hemsworth posted pictures of himself last month wearing Robert Downey Jr's face.

Saldana is joined by Chris Pratt, Dave Bautista, Vin Diesel, Bradley Cooper, Michael Rooker, Karen Gillan, Pom Klementieff, Elizabeth Debicki, Sean Gunn, Sylvester Stallone and Kurt Russell in the MCU sequel.

The movie sees the Guardians on the run from a race of 'perfect' beings called the Sovereign, when they hook up with Star-Lord's long-lost father.

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 2 is out now in the UK and arrives in the US on May 5.
