Gan Kim Yong warns of fake ad of him endorsing tea with health benefits

SINGAPORE — An advertisement with Minister for Trade and Industry Gan Kim Yong endorsing tea that claims to stabilise blood sugar is fake.

In a Facebook post on Thursday (26 May) night, Gan said the fake advertisement making its rounds had used a photo of him to promote the product. He did not mention the name of the product or where the advertisement is being disseminated.

The COVID-19 multi-ministry taskforce co-chair advised members of the public to be on their guard against such products claims and to always consult a doctor on their medical condition.

Health Minister Ong Ye Kung last month also warned on Facebook about fake advertisements of him endorsing medical products.

"As a practice, MOH officials and political appointees do not endorse any medical products," the taskforce co-chair said then.

While Ong did not provide details, an advertisement found on Facebook was doctored to show him and the late pioneer gynaecologist Dr Oon Chiew Seng holding a bottle of medication, which was claimed to be able to treat various eye diseases.
