Garbage Truck Explosion Caught on Doorbell Camera in Chicago Suburb

Three people were injured when a garbage truck exploded in the Chicago suburb of Arlington Heights on December 6, according to police.

Footage from Paul Garanzini shows the moment a portion of the truck exploded, with debris seen flying into the air.

Arlington Heights Police Department said they were called to a garbage truck fire, along with Arlington Heights Fire Department, on Friday afternoon. Upon arrival, a section of the truck exploded.

Two police officers and one firefighter sustained non-life-threatening injuries from flying debris and post-blast concussion, police reported.

Police explained that the vehicle, owned by Groot Waste Management, is powered by compressed natural gas.

Police said that debris landed several blocks away, and a shock wave caused substantial property damage, with windows shattered and roofs and sidings blown off. A fire engine windshield shattered and the airbags in a squad car activated. Credit: Paul Garanzini via Storyful
