Gary Lineker opened last night's (August 19) Match of the Day with a lovely tribute to Sir Bruce Forsyth.

The pundit introduced the show with a "nice to see you, to see you nice", before carrying on with yesterday's football news and results.

It was understated and rather touching, without going into a full tribute following the TV legend's death on Friday (August 18) at age 89.

Even though Brucie wasn't known for his footballing skills – far from it – some viewers thought it was a nice touch to acknowledge him.

Legendary entertainer Sir Bruce had been unwell for some time and was in hospital earlier this year after a severe chest infection.

Few can boast as impressive a TV career as Sir Bruce, who has been a fixture of British telly for the past seven-and-a-half decades.

He was known for getting us all obsessed with game shows such as The Generation Game, Play Your Cards Right and You Bet!, but of course he wasn't just about those.

An incredible dancer, Sir Bruce fronted Strictly Come Dancing alongside Tess Daly up until he stepped down in 2013, but continued to host the specials – till his illnesses made him unable to appear last Christmas.

"It is with great sadness that the Forsyth family announce that Sir Bruce passed away this afternoon, peacefully at his home surrounded by his wife Wilnelia and all his children," a statement read.

The family thanked those who "have sent cards and letters to Bruce wishing him well over his long illness and know that they will share in part, the great, great loss they feel."
