Gary Lineker quits BBC Match of the Day - have your say on who should replace him
Leicester City legend Gary Lineker has confirmed his departure from the BBC's Match of the Day. The star striker has been the host for 26 years but it set to leave in the coming months.
Former Foxes forward Gary, who is widely recognised as one of the highest earners at the BBC, has become a staple of Match of the Day since succeeding Des Lynam in 1999. He started out as a pundit on the show before graduating to become host.
Now, the 63-year-old, who is earning roughly £1.35 million annually from the BBC, will leave Match of the Day at the close of the 2024-25 season. However, it is not the end of his time with the BBC as Gary has agreed to an 18-month contract to remain with the broadcaster.

This new deal, which includes a significant salary cut, will see Gary host FA Cup games for the BBC. He will also make a return to screens for the 2026 World Cup hosted by the US, Mexico, and Canada.
Speaking of the new deal, Gary said: “I’m delighted to continue my long association with BBC Sport and would like to thank all those who made this happen.”
Bosses have praised Gary's contribution to Match of the Day, with the corporation now looking to find his successor. A number of familiar BBC Sport faces are in the frame, including Alex Scott, Gabby Logan and Mark Chapman.
