Gary Neville rages over Man Utd penalty incident after 'embarrassing' Pogba and Rashford confusion

Gary Neville was left fuming with the 'embarrassing' penalty incident that saw Manchester United miss out on the chance to move top of the Premier League.

With the game poised at 1-1, Pogba was brought down by Conor Coady inside the penalty area with just over 20 minutes of the match remaining.

Marcus Rashford slammed home a spot kick against Chelsea in United's opening game of the season last Sunday but after a brief conversation with his teammate, Pogba took responsibility for this one – with Rui Patricio keeping it out.

Former United defender Neville raged at the confusion over who is United's designated penalty taker, suggesting the problem may have stemmed at Old Trafford last Sunday.

"I think Pogba might be the penalty taker here and Rashford took it off his last week. That’s then caused a problem this week. It isn’t right," Neville said on Monday Night Football.

“They should decide in the dressing room – it’s embarrassing.

"This is a Manchester United penalty – this isn’t a tombola. This is not under-fives football on the playground."

Neville also questioned the lack of leadership on the pitch during the incident - and at one point pinpointed 19-year-old Daniel James as the ‘biggest leader’ on the pitch for the away side.

"Why is there a debate on who takes the penalty? I don't like it. There should never be a debate. Pogba has missed four in the last 12 months. You'd think he has had his chance. Rashford scored last week - take the penalty. But there wasn't a leader out there. Something wasn't right. They couldn't make a decision between them.”
