Gary Oldman’s emotional SAG Awards 2018 speech in full

Gary Oldman looked close to tears as he was crowned Best Actor at the Screen Actors Guild Awards.

The British star – who is tipped to triumph at the Oscars later this year – added to his litany of awards as he was honoured for his portrayal of Winston Churchill in Darkest Hour at Sunday night’s ceremony.

Oldman looked visibly tearful as he took to the stage, telling guests he was “overjoyed” and “thrilled” to be recognised.

He beat off tough competition from James Franco, Timothée Chalamet, Daniel Kaluuya and Denzel Washington to take the trophy just days after collecting a Golden Globe and a Critics’ Choice Award.

Here is his speech in full:

“I’ve become very emotional. Thank you SAG for this tremendous honour. I am honestly and truly thrilled and overjoyed to be in this room tonight. Not only with my amazing fellow nominees, but my friends and peers.

“There are giants of acting in this room tonight. Two of them share my table. Geoffrey Rush and Richard Jenkins. Robert De Niro, Morgan Freeman and my old sparring partner Denzel Washington.

“They are telling me to wrap up and that very sad music seems to follow me everywhere.

“I will just say this: Churchill reminds us we make a living by what we get, but we make a life by what we give and you have given enormity tonight and I am deeply, deeply honoured and proud to receive this magnificent award, god bless you all.”
