Gas leak probed at Scots school after car crashes into building

A suspected gas leak was probed at a school in Glenrothes after a car smashed into the building this morning.

Emergency crews raced to Glenwood High School at around 9am this morning after reports that a car had crashed into the building. The 49-year-old driver was taken to hospital but police confirmed he will also be reported to the Procurator Fiscal in relation to road traffic offences.

Follwoing the single-vehicle crash, a representative from the school reported smelling gas to the fire service and they called in the Scottish Gas Network (SGN). They sent out engineers to probe the leak and left after making 'the situation safe.'

A Scottish Fire and Rescue Service spokesperson said: "We attended the area at around 9am in relation to smoke coming from a car following a road traffic incident. The school were complaining that they could smell gas so we handed it over to the gas board."

A spokesperson for the SGN said: "We were called to the high school in our capacity as the National Gas Emergency Service.

"Our engineers arrived quickly and made the situation safe. We left site just after 12pm today."

A Police Scotland spokesperson said: “Around 9am on Sunday, 24 November, 2024, officers received a report of a single vehicle crash on South Parks Road, Glenrothes.

“A 49-year-old man was taken to hospital. He will be reported to the Procurator Fiscal in connection with road traffic offences.”
