Derby County academy prospect Ben Radcliffe produced a sensational performance for Gateshead as he scored his first goal for the club in their 2-0 win over Boston United last night.

The centre-back struck an excellent finish in the National League clash as Rob Elliot's side secured a victory that left them three points behind leaders Barnet.

Radcliffe secured the man of the match award and a place in the National League team of the week with former Derby prospect Owen Oseni also on target.

Derby have high hopes for the defender who is on loan until January and hopes to emulate the success of Derby striker Dajaune Brown, who scored 10 goals in 20 games for the Heed during his time in the north east last season.

Gateshead's club account was quick to pay tribute to Radcliffe with a post on Twitter last night which read: "There's just something about @dcfcacademy loanees. Ben Radcliffe is tonight's Sapori Gateshead Man of the Match."

Speaking after the game and about his move to Gateshead, Radcliffe said: "I am here for me as much as anything.

"I need the exposure and opportunity to impress. Maybe playing academy football at Derby wasn't giving me that opportunity. I've had experience with men's football before and I'll be honest I was really missing that.

"This is the perfect place for me to come. Rob (Elliot) is great as a person and as a manager he has really welcomed me. I've got that enjoyment and buzz back about my football. I am loving every minute here."
