Gateshead soldier in Japan for first overseas training exercise of Army career
A soldier from Gateshead is currently in Japan for the first overseas training exercise of his Army career.
Jude Danks, 19, has been working with the Japanese Ground Self Defence Forces to practice how to defend against an invading force.
After leaving Biddick Academy in Washington, Jude joined the Army in September 2022, when he began attending Army Foundation College Harrogate. After completing physical and mental tests, he is now set for parachute training in March.

He is primarily a member of The Scots Guards, but volunteered to serve in 3 PARA’s Guards Parachute Platoon in December. Now, he is on the mountainous island of Kyushu for Exercise Vigilant Isles, alongside his comrades.
The goal of Exercise Vigilant Isles is to strengthen the military relationship between the UK and Japan, with British soldiers the only group in Europe that can conduct this kind of bilateral training.
Jude said: "It’s been a great experience to come to Japan, as we’re allies, and this is all about building up the connection between us.
"The Japanese soldiers have been very friendly, and we’ve learnt about each other’s equipment and tactics. There are a lot of similarities in how we operate, but there are small differences that are interesting to see."
He added: "I’ve done Trooping the Colour and mounted guard at Windsor Castle and enjoyed the drill and ceremonial. I wanted to do something different and focus on my soldiering.
"Coming to 3 PARA has been a refreshing change and, even this early in my time, I can see that I’ll go back to the Guards as a better soldier, with different skills and experiences."
