A disabled woman says she is lucky to be alive after she was flung onto the road when a double decker bus struck the back of her wheelchair.

Eleanor Chapman was on her way to her local shop when the mid-morning collision happened, on Old Durham Road in Gateshead. The 47-year-old, from Deckham, said a double decker bus was pulling out as she crossed the road with her carer and she was flung onto the ground.

And today Eleanor, who was left using a wheelchair after having a tumour on her spine, has relived her terrifying ordeal.

She said: "There was nothing I could do to get out the way. I was just lying on the road, it was very scary, it could have crushed me. It's just a miracle I'm still alive to be honest."

Eleanor, who was an actress as a child but now suffers from epilepsy, was hit by the bus while making her way to the Premier convenience store, at around 10am on Saturday June 22. Her carer helped her back into her chair and took her home.

But around an hour later Eleanor, who is an artist, began to feel the impact of her fall and called an ambulance for herself.

"I was really disorientated, she said. "It was about an hour later when I started having severe abdominal pain. I rang an ambulance and they were here in 20 minutes. I had to go in an emergency ambulance and a consultant saw me. They said it's going to be very painful for the next couple of weeks. Everybody was really nice. The consultant did a whole body check."

Northumbria Police is now investigating the collision.
