Hundreds of holidaymakers have been left without their luggage after a failure at Gatwick Airport saw them arrive at their destinations bagless.

Over the weekend, a number of bags were not put on flights leaving the North Terminal because of problems with the system.

A number of unhappy customers, who had landed at destinations across Europe, have taken to Twitter to vent their frustration.

Some complained of not having medication while others have demanded compensation.

One Twitter user wrote wrote: "We are currently in Marrakech without our luggage that has our medication and medical creams because @easyJet cannot tell us where it is..."

Sofia Corcoran posted: "I call easyjet gatwick and I am redirected to Alicante who have not picked up since 8am.

"My 3mth son is without his milk, car chair & bed!"

Joy Francis wrote: "How can you leave every single passenger without their #luggage?

"Ask @easyJet @Gatwick_Airport. Couldn't make it up."

Paris Haque wrote: "Landed in Rome but the airline left all of our luggage in Gatwick London and it isn't coming until tomorrow. I'm in a tracksuit in 30C."

A Gatwick Airport spokesman said: "A small number of bags were not put on departing flights over the weekend due to an issue with the baggage system. The issue has since been rectified.

"Gatwick recognises the inconvenience that this issue has caused and would like to apologise to anyone affected. Passengers should contact their airline for the latest information on their missing luggage."

A spokesman for easyjet said: "Due to a baggage belt failure at London Gatwick Airport yesterday, easyJet, like other airlines, experienced delays in the delivery of hold luggage to departing aircraft.

"This resulted in a number of flights departing without all of the luggage stowed in the hold."

He added that the airline was working to return the luggage to passengers as soon as possible.
