It's one of Britain's much-loved sitcoms - and fans are eagerly awaiting its return later this year.

In May, it was confirmed there would be a brand new episode of Gavin and Stacey to be aired on the BBC later this year. Then in July, it was revealed the script had been completed and the stars had already been getting down to work.

These announcements caused huge excitement for fans of the show as there haven't been any new episodes since the last Christmas special in 2019. James Corden, who co-writes and stars in the sitcom has added to this excitement with his latest Instagram post.

The 46-year-old uploaded a snap from behind the scenes, with a nod to his famous character Smithy, the Mirror reports. He posted an image of the side of Smithy’s work van with the advert reading: "Smithy’s: if your husband won’t do it – I will… Tilin, roofin, plasterin, & feng shui. Call me on 07700978978."

Alongside the snap of the unlucky-in-love handyman's vehicle, James wrote: "Day 1. Here we go x."

Fans couldn't resist some puns after James took to Instagram. One wrote: "Smithster is back!! Don’t forget to mention the air fryer for Uncle Bryn. “I’ll tell you for why?" Another said: "This is the best picture I’ve ever seen in my life" while a third posted: "Can’t wait to hear Nessa recall her trucking days with Oasis."

The BBC comedy aired from 2007 to 2010 and then reappeared for a one-off special in 2019. However, fans were left on a cliffhanger, making them want more. Since the announcement of this year's special, several cast members have spoken about returning for the "finale", written by co-creators Corden and Ruth Jones, 57, who plays Nessa in the series.

In July, Corden opened up to Burnley presenter Jordan North on his Capital Breakfast show. He teased they were ready to wrap up loose ends, but wasn't certain how to do so.

The former Late, Late Show host then explained that rewrites could still be made: "We have to remove some time, we have to change some bits around. So we've been doing that, it's quite tough because Ruth’s in Sister Act over in the West End at the minute, and I'm doing The Constituent at the Old Vic."

"So we've been doing quite a bit of writing in dressing rooms and things like that. And then both looking at each other being quite tired from the plays but we'll be back at it tomorrow. Back at it Friday. I hope by Friday…it will be done and finished this Friday."
