Yahoo News Gavin & Stacey star explains surprise Christmas romance
Gavin & Stacey star Melanie Walters has responded to the 2024 Christmas special's biggest reveal.
The finale of the beloved BBC sitcom revealed that Smithy stayed with Sonia after the 2019 special, but more shocking than that (for viewers and the characters) was finding out that Gwen had a new boyfriend: Dave Coaches!
Walters stated that, when she first got her hands on the finale script, director Christine Gernon teased that her character's storyline would likely make her "shriek a little" when she read it.

"True enough when I turned the page, and there it was. It was Dave Coaches. I did [shriek]!" the actor said at a press screening (via Radio Times).

She added that she was very happy for Gwen to have a romance, although she revealed that she expected the mystery man to be someone else.
"Part of me sort of hoped, when you wonder what the story's going to be, I did sort of hope, 'Oh, I wonder if Gwen will have a little love in her life,'" she said.

"And then, when reading that, not in a million years would it be Dave Coaches – I thought it would be one of Doris’s cast-offs."
Walters concluded by saying that she felt "really blessed" to have such a big moment for her character in the finale, and gave her thanks to stars/writers Ruth Jones and James Corden for "an amazing, wonderful, beautiful storyline for Gwen".
While Stacey and Jason might not have had the best reaction to the reveal in the episode, Jason actor Robert Wilfort thinks Gwen and Dave make a "great couple".
