Great British Bake Off fans were left distraught on Wednesday night when heartthrob Selasi Gbormittah became the next contestant to leave the tent.

The famously cool and collected banker failed to impress judges Paul Hollywood and Mary Berry during Patisserie Week, and was subsequently sent home after making it to the semi-final.

Selasi was eliminated from GBBO on Wednesday night

His departure sent fans into a social media frenzy, with many taking to Twitter to share their hilarious reactions to the news that the Ghana-born baker would not appear in the final episode of the series.

One Twitter user declared that the country should be in "national mourning", while another revealed she "shed a bucket full of tears" when Mel Giedroyc and Sue Perkins announced Selasi's departure at the end of the episode.

The duo themselves shared their sadness at seeing him go - they even mock-fought to get the first hug from the biker-enthusiast as he said his goodbyes.

Selasi himself posted a hilarious photo on Instagram in which he pretended to eat an entire cake as he hosted one of his infamous viewing parties for the show. The baker took the opportunity to write a heartfelt message of thanks for his fans, fellow contestants and the judges for the support he had received throughout the series.

"Baker, Biker, Banker! HA.... What an intro into the legendary tent!" he wrote. "Such an honour and proud to have been selected as one of the lucky 12. Entered with a smile and leaving with an even bigger smile and a BIG slice of cake hehe! WOW!!!
