GBBO’s Sue Perkins: ‘I Felt Frightened And Lost When Mel Giedroyc Got Married’

Mel Giedroyc and Sue Perkins are basically the female version of Ant and Dec - they just fit perfectly together and we couldn’t ever imagine a TV world without the duo.

Which is why it is perfectly understandable that when Mel tied the knot, Sue was left feeling a little bit “frightened” and “lost”.

The Great British Bake Off hosts first met when they attended Cambridge University together in 1988, and Sue opened up about the toughest part of their friendship when discussing her memoir, ‘Spectacles’, at London’s Royal Festival Hall.

The 46-year-old explained to Dawn French: “Through all of our 20s and a good chunk of our 30s we were inseparable.

“You actually love each other and she met this amazing guy. There was this moment where you think ‘Oh’.

“I felt a certain kind of loss when she got married and had a kid.”

However, she was keen to clarify that there was absolutely “no sexual jealousy” involved.

Mel married Ben Morris thirteen years ago, and together they have two children. She and Sue made household names of themselves when they joined the Great British Bake Off back in 2010, but got the first real big break on the French and Saunders sketch show.

Speaking to the Daily Mail, Sue explained how she came to terms with “losing” her single best mate, explaining: “It is not 'I want what you have’, it is not 'I’m jealous’, it is the letting go and the profound love as you do it.

“You have to let the change happen… It has so many rewards.”

It was recently confirmed that Mel will be playing Frau Schmidt in a star-studded performance of The Sound Of Music that is set to air on ITV over Christmas.
